Moments we remember
Having just a few childhood memories is quite common and even normal. Memories are made when we feel safe, attached and nurtured. The memories I do have are mostly from being at the beach, with my family or on my own. In this new collection, I explored these memories and the reasons for the lack of many others, in order to better understand how the memories we carry with us through life are made, how they shape us, and even transform who we are in adulthood.
Choosing to work with real sand from my current environment in Portugal in this collection was intuitively driven by my strong connection to the coast, thus embracing what I remember from my own childhood, and trying to immortalise this connection in a tangible way. But also, because of the symbolic meaning of sand that I experienced through my work. Sand often represents the passing of time, it is delicate, slipping through our fingers when we try to hold it. Yet despite its fragility, sand is an element that goes through tremendous journeys and endures any external changes that come its way.
Through my work with sand on each piece, me being the external force this time, I observed the fragility of each grain of sand as it moved on the surface, but I also noticed that through the movement, the sand shaped itself and created its own moments of beauty. The more I worked with sand, the more I cherished the moments I do remember and how they strengthened me, teaching me to adapt and to be more gentle with myself. I hope this collection will remind you that you already have everything within you to transform your life. Shape it the way you want.
“We do not remember days, we remember moments. The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten.”
